Valentina SANDU-DEDIU - Meetings with Francisc László
Abstract
This subjective evocation of the personality of the musicologist and teacher Francisc László begins with my encounters with him in the Romanian music world, taking excerpts from some of my older articles, and assembles disparate pieces to form a picture of someone who was unquestionably an educator in the broadest sense of the word. He launched an idea but didn’t monopolise it; his primary concern was instead to constantly discover and mentor young musicologists, whom he enjoyed bringing together. His passionate expertise in Béla Bartók’s music and folklore are well known, but his love of the subject he investigates is neither declarative nor emphatic, and never clouds the analyst’s judgement. Whenever I come to Bartók, I know that I always have a precious source in Romanian, and this is thanks to Francisc László.
