ANCA-DANIELA MIHUȚ - Leopold Mozart, Apothecary

Abstract

The correspondence between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's family members is understood by musicians to be a valuable document about the composer's life and works, but it also proves to be a veritable chronicle of European daily life from the 18th century. The references to health, hygiene, diet, remedies, and therapeutical practice, which occupy a preponderant place in these letters, reveal to us a whole philosophy on the functioning of the human body, on life and death, but also on an unseen facet of Leopold Mozart’s complex personality: that of a skilled “military doctor” and handy apothecary.
